How Lightning Forms

Lightning is a massive electrostatic discharge that occurs when electrical charge differences within a thunderstorm โ€” or between a storm and the ground โ€” become large enough to overcome air's resistance to electrical flow. The 30-30 Rule for Shelter Timing

Lightning injures rather than kills in many cases. If someone is struck, they carry no electrical charge โ€” it is safe to touch them. Lightning strike victims often suffer cardiac arrest, and immediate CPR can save lives. Call emergency services immediately. Even apparent survivors of lightning strikes should be medically evaluated โ€” delayed effects include neurological damage, hearing and vision loss, and post-traumatic stress.
